About Philosophy at UBC

The Department of Philosophy, founded in 1915, is one of the oldest departments in UBC’s Faculty of Arts. Today, the Department offers major, minor and honors degrees in philosophy as well as joint majors in philosophy and economics, philosophy and political science, history and philosophy of science, and cognitive systems. We also offer well-regarded graduate training at both the MA and PhD levels.

The Department is strong in the core areas of analytic philosophy, with special strength in philosophy of mind, history and philosophy of science, value theory, and history of philosophy.

Philosophy develops students’ abilities to think critically and creatively through the study of the some of the deepest issues in human action, thought, and knowledge.  Students learn to argue rigorously and to express their positions with clarity and precision.  These skills apply universally and lead philosophy students to be successful in many academic and professional fields.
