On Friday 6 November\, Imogen Dickie (University of Toronto) will be giving a talk on the philosophy of m ind and language\, entitled: "Foundations for a New Atomism."
Abstract: What motivates ordinary b elief-forming activity? Are we aiming for a good (or good enough) map-like representation of the world around us? Or are we trying to represent partic ular objects? Neither? Both? I shall clarify the issues\; argue that ordina ry belief-forming activity is fundamentally directed towards representing p articulars rather than maintaining a map-like representation\; and show how this conclusion points us towards the titular foundations.
A bout the Speaker: Imogen Dickie is a philosophy professor at the U niversity of Toronto. Her research is primarily focused on "the theory of r eference\, singular thought\, and associated topics in the philosophy of la nguage and mind\, epistemology\, the philosophy of action\, and metaphysics ."
