I work mainly in aesthetics and am a member of the UBC aesthetics group. My research focusses on pictorial representation and perception; the aesthetic and epistemic value of pictures, including scientific images; theories of art and its value; the ontology of art; computer art and new art forms; aesthetic value; and the history of aesthetics in Europe and South Asia. I’m now working on a book entitled Pluralism and Its Discontents: Episodes in the History of Aesthetics.

Lopes is past chair of the APA Board of Officers and past president of the American Society for Aesthetics and the Canadian Philosophical Association. He is an associate editor at Ergo also serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of the American Philosophical Association, the Journal of Aesthetics and Art Criticism, and Estetica: European Journal of Aesthetics.
