Founded in 1915, the Department of Philosophy at UBC is one of the oldest departments in the Faculty of Arts. Our strengths in analytic philosophy help our students to develop their critical-thinking abilities for today’s important questions about life, thought, knowledge, and our social and intellectual traditions.
For undergraduate students, we offer major, minor and honours degrees in philosophy as well as combined majors in philosophy and economics, philosophy and political science, history and philosophy of science, and cognitive systems. We also offer Masters and PhD programs for those at the graduate level.
The skills we build in the UBC Philosophy Department help prepare our students to be successful in academic and professional fields.
Located on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) people, we are a community of faculty members, practitioners, students, research and support staff, all working together to advance the understanding of ourselves and the world around us through philosophy.
