On Friday 6 November, Imogen Dickie (University of Toronto) will be giving a talk on the philosophy of mind and language, entitled: “Foundations for a New Atomism.”

Abstract: What motivates ordinary belief-forming activity? Are we aiming for a good (or good enough) map-like representation of the world around us? Or are we trying to represent particular objects? Neither? Both? I shall clarify the issues; argue that ordinary belief-forming activity is fundamentally directed towards representing particulars rather than maintaining a map-like representation; and show how this conclusion points us towards the titular foundations.

About the Speaker: Imogen Dickie is a philosophy professor at the University of Toronto. Her research is primarily focused on “the theory of reference, singular thought, and associated topics in the philosophy of language and mind, epistemology, the philosophy of action, and metaphysics.” Professor Dickie is currently working on a follow-up to her 2015 book, Fixing Reference.
