Call for Applications: Sessional Appointment Lecturers for 2025-26 Winter Terms

MEMO: DEPARTMENT OF PHILOSOPHY, THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA CALL FOR APPLICATIONS TO TEACH IN:
- WINTER SESSION TERM 1 (Sept-Dec 2025)
- WINTER SESSION TERM 2 (Jan-Apr 2026)
The department will accept applications until June 13th 2025.
The Department of Philosophy invites applications to teach in the courses and terms listed below. Applicants may apply for more than one session, and must specify which session(s) and term(s) they wish to teach, which can also be in addition to any current courses you have been tentatively assigned to teach.
Preference will be given to applicants with a Ph.D. and experience in teaching at the college or university level and a record that provides evidence of teaching effectiveness. Applicants with previous Graduate Instructor experience (ABD) will also be considered. The minimum salary for a 3-credit course per term in the Faculty of Arts is currently $9,559.11.
Our winter courses will be delivered in person. We expect to require sessional instructors for approximately 8 courses on a variety of topics, dependent on student demand, applicant expertise and experience.
All positions are subject to funding and are governed by UBC’s “Agreement and Conditions of Appointment for Sessional Lecturers.”
In accordance with Canadian immigration requirements, priority will be given to Canadian citizens and permanent residents of Canada.

- PHIL 369-001: Philosophy of Science, in-person, MWF 11:00-12:00
- PHIL371/ASIA371-001: Foundations of Chinese Thought, in-person, MWF 14:00-15:00
Term 2 (Jan–Apr 2026):
- PHIL 220-004: Symbolic Logic, in-person, TR 14:00-15:30
- PHIL 321-002: Induction, Decision and Game Theory, in-person, TR 14:00-15:30
- PHIL 338-002: Philosophy of Law, in-person, TR 15:30-17:00
- PHIL 339-001: Philosophy of Art, in-person, MWF 11:00-12:00

- transcript of your academic record if you do not yet hold a Ph.D.

Decisions on course offerings will be made once the department has reviewed recent enrollment and assessed student demand. Due to budgetary constraints, the number of positions available is limited. Decisions for Winter 2025-26 Terms 1 and 2 will be shared with successful applicants.
