We are pleased to announce that our UBC Philosophy alumnus (2008) Kian Mintz-Woo was just awarded the 2021 Andrew Light Award for Public Philosophy by the International Society for Environmental Ethics. This award recognizes philosophy that engages with public issues, public communication, and policy interaction.
In 2021, Mintz-Woo did work that met all three criteria, publishing work on important climate policy questions (such as carbon prices); engaging with media through blogposts, newspaper opinions, interviews and even live radio interviews; and he attended COP26 in Glasgow, where he reported back for Irish media and even met the head of the Irish government (the Taoiseach, pronounced ‘TEA-shook’). He also took the time to engage with politicians back home, virtually meeting with provincial parliamentarians from across the country in an event organized by Citizens’ Climate Lobby Canada as a plenary keynote to discuss carbon taxes. (if you are going to look at just one of these things, he recommends listening to the radio interview).
