It is with great sadness that we report that John Woods passed away on August 15, 2024. John was an outstanding researcher and teacher who, following an illustrious career, served as Honorary Professor of Logic in our department. Although logic remained his core interest, his work branched out into many areas including philosophy of law and aesthetics. Faculty, staff, and graduate students will remember John as much for his incredible generosity, charm and warmth as for his intellectual leadership. In more than two decades following his retirement, he gave so much to our department: excellent teaching, hours of mentoring for graduate students, lively interaction with faculty, and much of his enormous library. Appropriately, the department created the John Woods Undergraduate Essay Prize to recognize these contributions and John’s particular interest in supporting his students. John retained his wry sense of humour and unwavering spirit, stating recently that he had enough ideas for about ten years more work, if the time were granted to him. Sadly, it was not, but what a life!
A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at St. Augustine’s Church, 2028 West 7th Avenue, Vancouver on Wednesday August 28 at 11am.
