Maurice Young Centre for Applied Ethics, School of Population and Public Health, UBC; and Associate Member of UBC Department of PhilosophyDr. Steel received his PhD from the Department of History and Philosophy of Science at the University of Pittsburgh in 2002. His research focuses on coupled ethical-epistemic issues in science, especially in relation to environmental and public health issues. He is the author of Philosophy and the Precautionary Principle: Science, Evidence, and Environmental Policy (Cambridge 2015) and Across the Boundaries: Extrapolation in Biology and Social Science (Oxford 2008), is co-editor, with Kevin Elliott, of Current Controversies in Values and Science (Routledge 2017), and is the author of numerous articles in leading journals in the philosophy of science. He has also recently been awarded a SSHRC Insight Grant ($73,500, 2017-2020) for a proposal titled, “Distinct Concepts of Diversity and their Ethical-Epistemic Implications for Science.” Dr. Steel is currently recruiting a Graduate Research Assistant to work on this grant.
